' Race ReportFollowing a second place in 2010 and having had to retire due to technical issues in 2011 this was Ace Racing's third attempt in the prototype class (Ace Racing had entered a GT car only in the 2009 event). Martin and Fabio decided
to race with just the two of them sharing a car as the other drivers either preferred the GT or would join the team in Vienna (where the drivers would be conducting the driver changes directly at the wheel) but they didn't mind that at all. The qualifying didn't go quite as well as we had hoped and P8 was slightly below expectations but in an endurance event the main thing is to manage a clean race and the position on the starting grid is less important. The many preparatory races proved to be a good idea as all participants had clearly gained the necessary practise and this experience became obvious in the way the race started without any incidents. Martin swiftly managed to move up into third place and was set to stay at the wheel for some time yet as the drivers had agreed on stints of 3 and even 4 hours.
The night changed things a bit and the driving became more difficult, especially the lapping manoeuvres were more
of a strain due to the reduced visibility and caused the lap times to drop slightly. At the exit of the Porsche turns the Euskadi was involved in a lapping manoeuvre that went awry and the team had to visit the pits twice in order to get the damage repaired completely. A few smaller incidents occurred, too, but none of them were really notable and even if they interrupted our drivers' rhythm slightly they weren't too bad and can be considered part of racing. In general,
all the participating drivers acted very professionally, thumbs-up for that! The two restarts that had to be conducted
were definitely not what an organiser would wish for but they are part of a major event and looking back they did not influence the race very much, at least from our point of view. As the final hours of the race commenced our team was in the lead but only by a small margin, AllStar Racing and the GRL team were both close behind. Fabio was at the wheel and looking at the lap times it was obvious that he was able to increase the gap to the GRL car but that Kevin Hirsch (AllStar Racing) was closing in. When Kevin was directly on Fabio's tail and moved to overtake him there was no need to put up too much of a fight as our strategy showed that our team would be able to stay in the lead after the final pitstops - provided nothing unexpected would happen. Another prototype who was a lap down gave Fabio a bit of a scare when trying to get back into the same lap and decided to start battling for position but the Race Control quickly put things back in order. Fabio did the final laps with added caution and his heart was beating fast but that's the way
it should be when approaching the finishing line on P1 in an event of this scale. When he crossed the finishing line we
all cheered and the supporting team members were the first to congratulate him and Martin to the win.
Ace Racing did not only contend in the prototype class, a GT2 was being run, as well, although it was not going for the win but rather looking to finish the race as its main goal. Gerry was at the wheel for the race start and his first double stint was very good indeed, especially his fight with Alex Simonov during the first laps was sensational. The Ferrari team had to battle with a few mishaps, though, and had to visit the pits a couple times at unscheduled moments. About two hours into the race Gerry had a spin which wouldn't have been too bad in itself but the following car was unable to avoid a collision. Steffen had a similar incident when a car spun directly in front of him and another accident was the inevitable result and well into the race the car even suffered a tire puncture. Despite the various setbacks the team was in good spirits and when dawn moved across the Le Mans track the Ferrari was running on P5 and doing well. A routine pitstop caused the team to fall back a little later, though. Harald had just completed a visit to the pits and was approaching the Dunlop turn when the engine failed due to overheating. The team had no choice than to return to the pits and change the engine (ESC and Rejoin). The incident was quite costly and the lost time saw the team lose two positions. The drivers worked hard to make amends but there was not enough time left and when crossing the finishing line the team had to settle for 7th place. All our drivers had a great time and will definitely be back again for the next endurance events. Thanks to the Orga and congratulations to all participants, a special thank you to our new sponsor "Fabrique"!
